3rd Generation Flood Mitigation

Aqueducts & Aqua Arteries

Patented in the USA, Australia, and Malaysia, Aqueducts & Aqua Arteries is Nexus EC's breakthrough flood mitigation system - engineered to protect lives, properties, and economies from the growing threat of climate-driven flooding.

Introduction

A 3rd generation flood mitigation system using elevated, large-scale aqueducts to rapidly divert floodwater away from urban areas – engineered to provide consistent, uninterrupted & infinite discharge above high tide levels in response to global warming and rising sea levels.

The Problem

Why Conventional Flood Mitigation Falls Short

The weakness of conventional flood mitigation methods lies in their narrow focus – they are engineered primarily to control & contain floodwater through physical infrastructure, rather than addressing the root causes of flooding, such as rising sea levels & the backwater effect. As a result, even well-built systems eventually reach their limits when conditions exceed what they were originally designed to handle.

1st Generation: River widening, deepening, straightening and earth detention ponds – these are designed to improve and increase river capacity and reduce flood risk.

2nd Generation: Detention ponds, underground diversion & tunnels – engineered to divert floodwater away from vulnerable areas and convey large volumes of floodwater during extreme flood events.

The Limitation of Conventional Systems

As global warming accelerates, a backwater effect occurs – seawater pushes back against river outlets, blocking floodwater from draining naturally into the sea. During heavy monsoon rainfall and storm surge, even the most well-designed conventional systems are rendered ineffective.

The Solution

A Failure-Proof Flood Mitigation System

This invention features a system that channels excess floodwater directly to the sea by elevating it above high tide before discharge – to ensure sufficient flow to counter development and global warming.

Acting as a reliable, failure-proof mechanism, the system is designed to defend low-lying areas during heavy rainfall combined with sea surge – supplementary to existing flood mitigation components.

With this invention fully implemented, the system represents the third generation of flood mitigation – built to save lives and reduce the potential loss of property and economic damage at a national scale.

How Aqua Arteries Work

Aqua Arteries are large underground monsoon drains that collect excess floodwater from surface monsoon drains and deliver it to the Aqueducts – elevated channels above ground.

Rapid Discharge, Above Storm Surge Level

Once collected, floodwater is pumped up from the aqua arteries onto the elevated aqueducts, then flows by gravity along the aqueduct's gradient toward the sea.

By discharging above high tide and storm surge levels, this pump-assisted, gravity-driven system ensures floodwater is channeled out before it can back up into low-lying, flood-prone areas - remaining effective even during extreme weather events.

Capacity Enhancement for Existing Drains

Many urban areas suffer from undersized/under-capacity monsoon drains that simply cannot handle peak flood volumes. Aqua Arteries solve this by acting as a capacity enhancement layer - channeling overflow away from strained drainage networks.

An Integrated Solution

Nexus Weir - Barrier Against Seawater Intrusion

Conventional barriers and barrages can only do one thing – prevents seawater intrusion further inland.

Nexus Weir is engineered to increase efficiency of river discharge and maintain cleaner rivers. At the same time, it is able to store water, which can be used as a water resource.

Based on Nexus EC’s research and modelling, Nexus Weir can increase river discharge capacity by 23.7% to 63%, significantly reducing flood risk in low-lying and coastal areas.

A Global Climate That Demands a Smarter Solution

Why It Matters

Save Lives

From 1990 to 2022, floods caused over 218,000 deaths across 168 countries - and the threat is growing. Our system is engineered as a failure-proof mechanism to drastically reduce this devastating human toll.

Reduce Economic Losses

Floods have been responsible for over USD 1.3 trillion in economic losses globally since 1990. Effective flood mitigation is not just an engineering investment - it is an economic necessity.

A Multipurpose Solution

Beyond flood control, the system solves water shortages - supplying water, recharging groundwater, and supporting irrigation, transforming a defensive infrastructure investment into a long-term national resource asset.
